Westlake High School: Home of the Chaps Bong
Eanes, which includes Westlake High School, asked Pride Surveys last fall to come in and conduct research on the use of drugs and alcohol in their schools. Over 850 students from Grades 6-12 were surveyed.
According to their findings, "more than half of seniors admitted to having a drink of alcohol once a month." Almost as many admitted to smoking THE J in the past year, with close to 30 percent mad tokin’ doing it at least once a month. Both results are above average. Not included in the study was data about prescription drug use, cocaine or speed.
Doug Hall, spokesman for Pride Surveys, has stated that there appears to be “a pretty serious marijuana problem in the area.” But, like Austinist, he isn’t surprised. In a neighborhood where the average home price is $606,216, Hall believes the association between the wealthier community and higher teenage drug use is clear.
With less than two weeks left in the school year, Westlake has recently decided to do something about their substance abuse problem. While being sure to mention the past funding cuts that required Eanes to transfer money to property-poor school districts, Superintendent Nola Wellman said the district is looking at renewed prevention efforts and has hired additional counselors.
