Westlake High School: Home of the Chaps Bong

This might be a tad presumptuous on our part, but we think that rich kids generally do more drugs, given that they have more freedom from parents and easier access to cash and transportation to buy said drugs. Our assumption isn’t scientific theory of course, but based on a survey released by Eanes ISD, it may be nearly accurate.

Eanes, which includes Westlake High School, asked Pride Surveys last fall to come in and conduct research on the use of drugs and alcohol in their schools. Over 850 students from Grades 6-12 were surveyed.

According to their findings, "more than half of seniors admitted to having a drink of alcohol once a month." Almost as many admitted to smoking THE J in the past year, with close to 30 percent mad tokin’ doing it at least once a month. Both results are above average. Not included in the study was data about prescription drug use, cocaine or speed.

Doug Hall, spokesman for Pride Surveys, has stated that there appears to be “a pretty serious marijuana problem in the area.” But, like Austinist, he isn’t surprised. In a neighborhood where the average home price is $606,216, Hall believes the association between the wealthier community and higher teenage drug use is clear.

With less than two weeks left in the school year, Westlake has recently decided to do something about their substance abuse problem. While being sure to mention the past funding cuts that required Eanes to transfer money to property-poor school districts, Superintendent Nola Wellman said the district is looking at renewed prevention efforts and has hired additional counselors.

naw dude...

You forgot that rich kids also don't go to jail for drug possession. Which makes the illegal part of "illegal drugs" a bit of a misnomer.

I'd love to see the statistics for how many high school students are arrested on drug charges out there as opposed to the areas of Austin where drug use was low.

They also have a mean crystal meth problem up there too. Plus a lot of the westlake kids do coke...as do their parents. You'd be surprised what you find at the drycleaners in westlake....or when the teens come in with sheets reakin' of weed and want to know the soonest it can be cleaned.

a pretty serious marijuana problem in the area? is marijuana a serious problem?

Gives a new meaning to High School. But you know what they say: Mo' money, mo' problems.
