Matador records describes newish signees The Cave Singers as "folk music approached by way of punk rock," and apparently this Seattle band didn't have an inclination to work in this genre in the first place - it just turned out that way. It's moody, maudlin stuff, and the kind of genre-splicing act that fits right into the Matador roster, which includes everything from Matmos to Shearwater, Cat Power to Mission of Burma.
The Cave Singers released Invitation Songs last autumn, and they'll be stopping at The Mohawk this evening before a few more southern shows and a stop at the Sasquatch festival in Seattle. Performing with the band are two bands from Athens with more than ten listed members each, which is how they do it out there. Quiet Hooves are a mysterious group that blends lounge music with folk, and it comes out better than it might sound. Also appearing is...say, it's Dark Meat! The small crowd who saw them upend Spiro's during SXSW aren't going to forget that performance anytime soon. The evening consisted of lots of dropped acid, a ramshackle run-through of The Stooges' Funhouse, ceiling tiles falling from overhead and microphones crushed underfoot. It was awesome, but a little scary. They're sure to have some tricks up their sleeves for this performance.
