Austinist Show Preview: The Weird Weeds at the Salvage Vanguard Theater

It’s a weird weird weird weird weird weird world, and The Weird Weeds are emblematic of the times. Our favorite avant-garde local pop band gets quite a bit of press, and here’s just one reason why: the band are simultaneously challenging and odd while remaining irrepressibly goofy and even cute and approachable. The same can be said for very few experimental rock bands out there, save for Weird Weeds stage-sharers Xiu Xiu – and even they traipse on the “creepy” side a little too often for many of us.

Having released I Miss This on the local imprint Autobus records, The Weird Weeds are heading on tour this June, but not before playing one final show in Austin before their voyage. Starting at 8:00, this performance will take place at the Salvage Vanguard Theater, and sponsored, as so many good shows in Austin are, by The Church of the Friendly Ghost.

Joining The Weird Weeds for this performance are fellow Austinites Baby Robots and Seattle band The Dead Science. Baby Robots were formed by Bobby Baker and represented Florida for many years before the project up and moved to Austin. The band play something akin to Velvet Underground meets 90s shoegaze jams, and have at least ten years of rock to back up their live set.

The Dead Science will be the evening’s headlining act, and after releasing two albums, the band have recently come into some good tidings. First of all, they had the great honor of serving as our own Daniel Johnston’s backing band at a Seattle gig in mid-April, and they’ve also hopped from Absolutely Kosher records to Constellation, a fantastically forward-thinking label whose many acts include Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Do Make Say Think, Silver Mt. Zion, and more. Constellation has plans to put out the band’s third record Villainaire out in early September.
