New Release Tuesday: Elvis Costello and Wildbirds & Peacedrums

Elvis Costello Momofuku (Lost Highway)

Costello has already released Momofuku on vinyl (2xLP), but the CD release arrives today. Those who purchased the vinyl two weeks ago had codes to download digital versions then, but not much has "leaked" to the web yet in terms of reception. Costello's 24th official release features collaboration with new friend Jenny Lewis, who enlisted EC to help with her upcoming solo release. Momofuku features work by singer-songwriter Jonathan Rice too, who also worked on Lewis' record and is now a part of Costello's band. According to Billboard, the record's title is for Momofuku Ando, who invented the first cup noodle. Costello added that the making of the twelve tracks came surprisingly easy, claiming, “All we had to do to make this record was add water.” Har, har, Declan. Ever the champion of powerful pop and meaningful reflections, Costello lives up to his own legend with this latest album, which itself was a bit of a surprise: not much buzz existed for its release until March of this year.

Wildbird & Peacedrums Heartcore (Leaf)

Singer Mariam Wallentin and drummer Andreas Werliin are the Swedish duo known as Wildbirds & Peacedrums. Their music is somewhere in between jazz, pop and eccentric soul. Wallentin's voice is one of the most wild, strong and interesting instruments out there, fluctuating between fragile and bizarre. There are hints of Kate Bush in her inflections, but there is something raw festering beneath the surface that fosters the vulnerable feeling of the entire work. Werliin's percussion work is astounding: his patience and firm grasp on the concept of space toys with elite avant jazz elements, but never strays too far from the intimate essence of the songs. Recording on a mobile unit, the duo released the record on CDRs originally (then on Found You records), but have now found a home for this blissfully original and heart-wrenching work on the Leaf label. They plan to tour Europe and North America this year.

Elvis *lies*! "Momofuku," in fact, is what bystanders heard him say as he was being strangled by Bonnie Bramlett.
