Get a Taste of Fantastic Fest Tonight!

Exte: Hair Extensions
Wednesday, April 30
Alamo Drafthouse Downtown (320 E 6th Street)
9:30pm & Midnight, FREE for current Fantastic Fest badgeholders / $5 General public
[info] | [tickets]
Though Fantastic Fest '08 is nearly five months away (why won't you work, time machine!?), devotees and newcomers alike can get a taste of the kickass genre film festival TONIGHT as the Alamo presents Exte: Hair Extensions, a favorite from FF '07.

Directed by Sion Sono (who also directed the cult hit Suicide Club), Exte follows a batch of killer hair as it chokes, tangles and stabs its way through a group of customers at a fancy Japanese salon. Bloody, funny and imaginative, Exte is not your typical J-horror. And the best part is, it's probably too strange and awesome to be ruined by an American remake!

There will be two showings: one at 9:30pm, and one at midnight. Admission is free for current Fantastic Fest badgeholders (meaning you have a badge for FF 08), and a wickedly decent $5 for the general public. Keep in mind, this is a one-night-only event, so don't miss it.

OH! And if that's not enough to sate your Japanese genre film appetite, the Alamo South Lamar is also showing FF '07 fave Big Man Japan--a fact which we, admittedly, should have alerted you to last week.

Big Man Japan is easy to recommend but hard to explain--it's an explosion of Japanese awesomeness that somehow manages to be a mockumentary, a deadpan comedy, a rubber suit monster movie, a screwball action film and a special effects extravaganza all at the same time.

It follows the exploits of the titular Big Man as he defends Japan from ridiculous (and sometimes surly) monsters--but with his popularity waning and his savings diminishing, Big Man's private life isn't as glamorous as one might expect. Trust us--you've never seen anything quite like Big Man Japan. It swings so quickly from slow, dry comedy to absurd monster movie that you won't know what hit you! If you're a genre fan, you'll definitely dig it.

Big Man Japan is screening this week and next week at the Alamo South Lamar. Tickets and info here.
