Austinist Giveaway: No One Else in the Woods Tonight

The subtitle of [humdrum collective]'s current production—No One Else in the Woods Tonight—is "The Iron Lung Play." Photos of hospital wards filled with iron lungs are a fascinating artifact of our history. The machines look barbaric but saved thousands of lives by allowing polio patients to survive during weeks or months of temporary respiratory paralysis.

[humdrum collective] is an intrepid gang of thespians whose previous productions include the lauded works The United States IS, Against My Will, and Past Present Future Tense. This time they're taking on not only the 1950's polio epidemic, but also fantastical storytelling about life, death, and the afterlife. Set to cello music.

If that's all a little too out there, here's the intriguing plot: Carmella writes letters about her dreams of the afterlife and leaves them in the woods for a stranger, Wayne, to read. When Wayne is invited to meet Carmella, he finds her in the paralytic onsets of polio. Carmella awakens inside an iron lung with Wayne as her caretaker. Things get pretty abstract after that.
