Butler Park: Austin's Newest City Park

In an effort to honor the who's who of Austin legacies, City Council has finally named the new city park near the south shore of Lady Bird Lake and just west of the Palmer Events Center (between Riverside Drive and Barton Springs Road) Butler Park. The park was named in honor of the Butler family that donated the land to the city. In the late 1800s, Butler was an Irish immigrant who ran a successful brick-making business on the land.

Advocates of other groups, specifically the Friends of Liz Carpenter, are thrilled that the park's coolest feature, the high-tech, interactive fountain beloved by kids of all ages, was named for Liz.

Now that Downtown Austin is home to Lady Bird Lake, Ann Richards Bridge, and Liz Carpenter Fountain, these grand Texas ladies, always recognized for always having the last word, have truly made their mark on Austin for all time.

This is a cool park. one of the best things about it is the sweet light/fountain show that occurs nightly after the sun goes down. It is about 15 minutes and very entertaining, whoever designed it did a great job.
