City Council Approves Mobile Loaves & Fishes Housing Plan

The Austin City Council has unanimously approved a plan for a long-term lease to Mobile Loaves & Fishes, a social outreach ministry to the homeless and indigent working poor, for 10 acres near Harold Court Road in east Austin. According to Mobile Loaves & Fishes, the area could support up to 150 homesites (100 recreational vehicles and 50 cottages). The cost to residents is expected to be $325-$375 per month for recreational vehicles or park model homes, and $100 per month for the camping cottages, all including water, electricity, cable and internet service. To be eligible to live in Park Place, individuals must be "chronically homeless" as defined in the city's 10 Year Plan to End Chronic Homelessness (unaccompanied individuals with disabling conditions who have either been continuously homeless for a year or more, or who have had at least four episodes of homelessness in the past three years). Applicants must have a fingerprint criminal background check through the FBI and the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Our pal Wells makes the fine point that Harold Court Road ain't no easy bus ride.

I am happy to hear about this development for now. Looking forward to seeing how this helps out since I have not read about the detailed purposes in doing this. Does this keep them off the benches at night, away from downtown, or does it push these renters away from inner city intersections?

Would like to hear more. I am surprised to be the first comment.
