Anyone who cuts down a single tree in this city should have to plant 10 in its place, and anyone piling more density into south central austin should have to pay huge sums of money to support the increased infrastructure to support all these new people. Agreed on your first point regarding trees. As for your second, increased density adds to the tax base, which in turn pays for infrastructure costs. It's the suburbs you should take issue with, as sprawl involves higher infrastructure costs (per capita) than urban infill.

Satanoid - city densification will never replace suburban sprawl only because idiots still buy into the "American Dream". Regardless that does not mean Austin should not densify. Some of the most beautiful cities in the world are the most dense. If you can't handle that Austin is a growing city move to the sticks. I do agree with Loud Mouth, we need more affordable housing in the center of the city. Having said that....Loud Mouth, shut the fuck up.I don't see how this amature graffiti supports anybodies cause for affordable housing in Austin. I call bullshit on that. Higher density at the core of the city doesn't magically replace a bunch of 3000 square foot houses out in the sticks. Encouraging density downtown is ok, but it doesn't do a goddamn thing to limit suburban sprawl. Also, people like me? People who support responsible growth, you mean?

satanoid, people like you are why Barton Springs isn't going to survive. Those big apartment buildings near the river replace a hundred or so suburban houses in the next Circle C, where the runoff would go into the aquifer, and eventually the springs.

I don't want to be a yuppie but I don't think you have to be a yuppie just because you make too much money. You can still ride the bus and talk shit about rich people and give money to the poor even if you have to wear a suit to work. I don't think it's right that they're destroying places with low rent to build high rent housing. I also don't think it's right to cram thousands of people into a space that is not equipped to support all those people.

I was born in 78704. I bought my first home at 18 in a soulless neighborhood in north austin, because it was all I could afford. After 6 years of hard work, I finally saved up enough (and my house had gained enough value) for me to sell it, and move south. Bought a nice home built in 1945, on a street I rode my bike on as a kid. I'm young, a professional, and I'm sure a 'yuppie' to some. That being said, I think its a fucking abomination to build such huge buildings this close to the river... and anyone who would forgo a 5 minute walk to barton springs to swim in a chlorine pool deserves a kick in the head. Bridges on the Park is on Lamar, pd. The new condos "2 blocks from Barton Springs" are called "Barton Place", and yes, they'll probably have a pool, but that's not what these idiots vandalized.

well - as one who lives in the neighborhood: that sign has was vandalized several weeks ago and then followed up with a el-arroyoish fun combative back and forth on a briefly placed marque standing sign (apparently re-arranging letters is fun); this does entertain. my personal laugh came from the first day i read the sign i interpreted it as euict yuppies and didn't understand what random south austin slur i had been missing...
