To shake up the sometimes stuffy image of wine festivals, local organizers of the Texas Hill Country Wine & Food Festival have added some late night events to this year's slate of tastings. To kick off the festivities, Threadgill's will host Austin Uncorked & Acoustic on Thursday, April 10th at 9pm. The key ideas are these: an outdoor setting, live music, a casual atmosphere, and great Texas food and drink.
Let's start with the food. We're amused and pleased to find the three official Austin food groups here: barbecue, Tex-Mex, and Southern home cookin'. Threadgill's is no slouch when it come to chicken fried steak, fried okra, and the like, and they'll provide many of the snacks on offer. Local fancy BBQ mavens Lambert's will also be on hand, as will Temple's Las Casas Restaurant and more to be announced. Desserts will come from the mysterious Austin Cookie Lounge.
Live music offerings feature the Heybale! Orchestra, which can most accurately described as The Resentments of the old-school country set. The band features members of the Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, Buck Owens and Dale Watson touring bands, so you can expect a lot of real classic country tunes that sound like "The Fightin' Side Of Me" or "Silver Wings." The Willie Nelson-endorsed Doug Moreland and Austin's Sunny Sweeney are also on the bill. Make no mistake - these aren't hat acts, for those of us afraid of that sort of thing. This is Loretta Lynn, Faron Young, Conway Twitty-type music to accompany your evening out.
The key component to Austin Uncorked & Acoustic, though, is the wine. This being a night of twang at Threadgill's and all, all wines being poured will be from Texas. Participants include Alamosa Wine Cellars, Bell Mountain, Llano Estacado Winery, Mandola Estate Winery, Messina Hof Winery, Peregrine Hill Vineyards, and Torre Di Pietra. All told, this should be the beginning of a new annual tradition from the Texas Hill Country Wine & Food Festival.
