Nice job, Weakerthans. While many bands just incorporate their SXSW stop as part of their national or international tour, not to return to our streets for many months (and trust us, we understand), these Canadian folk-punkers are returning to Austin just a scant two weeks after they visited us for the festival.
This time around, they will have our full attention as they play The Parish this Wednesday, free from the hoopla and fuss of Austin’s beloved/bedraggled music festival. The Weakerthans’ latest album Reunion Tour was released in the fall of last year, following a four-year break after their last effort Reconstruction Site, though they've yet to make a stop in Austin until this past month.
The Weakerthans have a devoted fan base, but if you’re in the dark about them, let’s get you up to speed. First, the band was formed after lead man John K. Samson left the vegan/anarchist punk band Propagandhi in favor of something a little less restrictive and pissed off. Since 1997, The Weakerthans have released four albums and one EP, cementing their status as a brainy, literate outfit not afraid to cut loose.
Opener A. A. Bondy hails from Alabama, and was also just in town to play a few day parties for SXSW. His relaxed, acoustic-driven songs leave a wealth of space and silence between phrases which throw attention onto their composition and his lyrics, occasionally held up with the bonus of percussion or keys. It should be the perfect start to the evening, and if you really dig Bondy’s material, you can pick up his latest Fat Possum release American Hearts or catch him as he plays Conan O’Brien on the eleventh.
Christine Fellows, a solo artist whose latest album Nevertheless is a dense, string-heavy turn of pop pushing forward, will also lend support. She’s four albums into her solo career, and when she’s not recording under her name, she builds pigeon coups and collaborates with husband Sampson on a myriad of musical projects.
