Friday is the one weekday of
SXSW when normal people -- who read indie music blogs,
naturally -- get off of work and make their way down to
Red River St. get a piece of the action. So it’s no surprise that many of those schedule-packed shows will be presented by said blog machines, including
Stereogum and the
Hot Freaks (a super-hip blog collaboration).
First on the to-catch day shows list is the Stereogum/Paste show at the Dell Lounge (at Volume at 6th and Red River). An indie extravaganza to be sure, perks include some free beverages and a swag bag if you get there early enough.
Filling out the line-up for the show are bands from across the globe, just how they like it at SXSW. Beginning the day is Lightspeed Champion, or Devonte Hynes of the UK, whose acoustic-style indie pop is plenty palatable so as to ease last night’s hangover. Next up are The Weakerthans of Winnipeg with folk-style indie rock just verging on emo -- enough so you know they’re sensitive guys. Former instrumentalist and composer Kaki King follows with a blend of chordal and melodic songs. Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin is next on the docket with a funny, energetic style out of Springfield, MO, followed by Liam Finn of New Zealand, a very bearded son of the famous Neil Finn (of Crowded House and Split Enz). Taking the all-day show into the golden hour are The Whigs of Athens, GA, a rather garage-style indie rock outfit, packed with drums, Dave Grohl-ish vocals, and occasionally grinding guitars. RSVP to make it in!
Another bumpin’ show on Friday is the ever-popular
Hot Freaks takeover at the
Mohawk/Deville empire. That’s three stages, folks. Hot Freaks, as you may know, is a collective for the “most influential music bloggers in the country.” Really? Sure. They always put on an excellent show, but you can’t go unless you RSVP, and you can’t RSVP unless you
sign up for the Hot Freaks community, and you might not even get in unless you show up early enough. So if this is your day, and this is your day party, then go for it! Yeah! After all,
look what you might be missing. Yes, the lineup will be something like the following:
Nicole Atkins and The Sea,
Evangelicals,
Blair,
The Dodos (we were obsessed with these extinct birds as children; unrelated, we’re excited to see this band),
Blood On the Wall,
Ola Podrida,
Cadence Weapon (who we welcome back after a great set at Fun Fun Fun Fest),
Black Joe Lewis and the Honey Bears (our local soul men),
Cameron McGill,
White Denim (still our favorite Austin buzz/continuous buzz band),
Peter Moren of Peter, Bjorn and John,
Bowerbirds,
Blitzen Trapper,
Jens Lekman (we’ll melt if this darling crooner brings along his all-female band),
Jason Collett, and
British Sea Power.
DJ Hood Internet will keep you entertained during necessary moments of festival-style stage breakdown and set-up.
LOL INDIE ROCK
how the shit do you RSVP? i logged in after creating an account and when i click RSVP, it keeps taking me back to the same home page. or is that endless looping their creative way of saying the RSVP was successful?
apparently that loop IS the rsvp process. sweet.
Yeah, that Hot Freaks rsvp is broked crappy.
Related note: RSVP'ing only works about 50% of the time, anyway. Even when you get an email confirm. Best to simply walk up and act like you belong, like their not having your name on their list is their mistake and not yours, to every party you're tempted to visit. Door folk honestly aren't in it for confrontation, and the shit's free anyway.
Lekman's a funny fucker.
LOL xFR33B00ZE[ex] LOL
tc- agreed. i just like to minimize the amount of my drunken arguing and maximize the staggering into the venue.
i found myself on the "i'm going link", so apparently my 90000 clicks on the rsvp button got registered!
another option is to walk through past the door with a nod. if asked, say you're running late for the show and you think you're supposed to be on stage (only works if you can sell the character).
so craig: you going for hungover/sick door working again this year?
Again? Me working the door? You're a quick one, you are! Yeah, I'll likely be there, looking beaten and butter-eyed.
Never bet against my hang overs. They're a constant, and without them, I might actually have a notable personality when people meet me.
Instead I just sigh and cry a-lot.
I'll see all y'all on Wednesday for the day party. At the door. Shout Out Louds!
