Austinist Previews SXSW: Pitchforkmedia/Windish Agency & Soundcheck Party

Another day, another long list of long list of web-darling music acts and their attendant corporate sponsors. Exhibit X: Pitchforkmedia, the site we all love to hate to love, has teamed with booking agents par excellance The Windish Agency for Friday's day-long throwdown at Emo's indoor/outdoor (the lounge will be occupied by Skyscraper Magazine's party, also sure to be a good time). Bands include, in no particular order, No Age, Yeasayer, Atlas Sound, White Williams, Jay Reatard, Times New Viking, and A Place To Bury Strangers. That works out to about four tons of shrieking white-noise rock per ounce of electro-funk-slash-slowcore; bring earplugs and expect to use them. Corporate sponsors include Sparks, TicketWeb, and Boost Mobile, who respectively are responsible for turning your tongue a bilious orange, causing ridiculous service fees, and giving you brain cancer. Party on, Wayne!

Soundcheck Magazine, complete with colorful, glossy issues and now a blog as well, brings us a versatile line-up on Friday. Fresh off their weekly residency at Beauty Bar over the last couple of months, the local magazine has secured many quality acts for their day show that also doubles as their 2nd Birthday Party. This free shindig starts at 11 a.m. at Emo's Annex with Why?, Cloud Cult, Evangelicals, Le Loup, and Ra Ra Riot being just a few of the attractions. Recently voted "Best Magazine" by Austin360.com's Readers Poll, the current edition of Soundcheck features interviews with buzz-worthy bands such as Vampire Weekend, MGMT, and Yeasayer, and will be available at the show, no doubt.

Pro-Tips: Before heading to the Dell Lounge - sponsored by Stereogum and the ever-impressive Paste magazine - you might want to grab a quick veggie wrap and espresso at Progress Coffeea couple blocks east of the highway on 5th. You're gonna need the leafy antioxidants and subsequent burst of energy for the show, which starts at noon-time and ends at 6pm, featuring Lightspeed Champion, Kaki King, and The Whigs among others.

If you happen to run out of smokes during set-up and breakdown between bands, run over to Bobalu Cigar Co. and pick up your favorite carcinogen. Just head in the direction of foot traffic to Neches Street; it's one block away, so easy on those taxed lungs of yours. Real (read: slightly expensive) food like steak with creme fraiche or fuh-gee-tuhs can also be found at nearby Chez Nous and Iron Cactus, respectively. Complete the meal by ordering wine and/or some insane margaritas. Don't fill up too much because there are a lot of great acts performing up the street, and you're not going to want to miss out just because some hungry, overzealous Austinist writer went a bit heavy on the food suggestions.

Walking up Red River, you'll pass the Free Yr Radio Broadcast Corner where Billy Bragg and Dizzee Rascal will demonstrate the different sound colours of Essex and East London. Further north, stop by the Red Eyed Fly where The Stills, Rogue Wave, and many more will be playing free. North-lier, Stubb's is hosting some fun and dirty acts, with N.E.R.D, The Cribs, MGMT, Vampire Weekend, and Diplo among them. If, by this time, your sozzled heels lead you to 6th Street, you can find the Helio Sequence and Handsome Furs playing the Bourbon Rocks Patio (!), or watch Destroyer and the Shout Out Louds at the Parish. Finish off the night with thai iced tea and spring rolls at Thai Passion, open specifically for you night-hawks until 3 a.m. -Pro Tips by Josh Huck
