He’s a master of sampling and an early proponent of turntablism, but you won’t find Carl Stone working with Kanye any time soon. Instead, throughout his musical career, minimalist pioneer Stone has experimented with electronics and sound in a way that recalls his hero John Cage and other irrepressible avant-garde musicians of his ilk. Called “the king of sampling” by The Village Voice, Stone has been the recipient of grants by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Rockefeller Foundation, has worked spent time as a Scholar-in-Residence at the Bellagio Center in Italy, and just this past year he unveiled his latest album Al-Noor.

Thanks in part to Austin label Unseen Worlds, the first label to put out a CD reissue of Stone’s debut album Woo Lae Oak, and to the Austin Museum of Digital Art, Stone is coming to Austin this Wednesday to perform the piece “Guelagutza.” In addition to audio constructions of this piece, “Guelagutza” also contains a visual portion, which showcases a “variety of digital manipulations that parallel many of Stone's signature audio processing techniques.”
