New Release Tuesday: Weird Weeds

nrt.png

Stay tuned this week for a review of the new What Made Milwaukee Famous release, What Doesn't Kill Us. Backtrack to read our review of Stephen Malkmus' Real Emotional Trash here. Otherwise, apologies for the abbreviated NRT this week - we're gearing up for SXSW and it's taking a toll on our listening habits! -Ed.

The Weird Weeds I Miss This (Autobus)

Austin's Weird Weeds spent seven months in the studio working on their latest full-length, I Miss This, and by their own admission, the effort asserted towards this record is by far the most intense in their history. One listen demonstrates their devout attention to detail in regards to both production and songwriting amply. "Red" oozes thick guitar dirges, sweetly tempered percussion and odes to Indian sitar harmonies (and carefully executed dissonance) with equal precision. The entire work is a little reminiscent of Home's Elf: Gulf Bore Waltz, only not lo-fi and a little sleepier. Though Sandy Ewen's vocals remain a bit challenging, it's fair to say that on a good day she's akin to Karen Dalton in her throaty, bluesy sort of delivery. Tracks like "A Goose" demonstrate this likeness most clearly. We find ourselves taking much more pleasure in the pieces that don't include vocals at all, and would love to hear an entirely acoustic Weird Weeds record. All told, this is a solid release from a band dedicated to experimentation, and a marked improvement from previous efforts. Don't miss out the split 7" with Shapes & Sizes free when you purchase the full-length at End of an Ear.

Also recommended this week: We can't vouch for the particulars of the new This Year's Model remastering (Elvis Costello), but it's worth a listen just for the bonus tracks. Norway's Hanne Hukkelberg has two releases this week worth checking out (and will be here for SXSW in a week), and of course there's some kind of Van Morrison greatest hits thing.
