SXSW Film Preview: Mister Lonely

Sometimes, we go see a movie because it looks bizarre and exciting and original. Other times, we go see a movie because we're interested in the people behind it. And then, in very rare cases, we go for both reasons.

Harmony Korine's Mister Lonely follows the adventures of an American Michael Jackson impersonator (Diego Luna) who meets a charming Marilyn Monroe impersonator (Samantha Morton) on the streets of Paris. Together, they travel to a commune populated exclusively by celebrity impersonators--a Neverlandesque place where everyone is famous, and the spotlight never fades.

Best known for Directing the cult hit Gummo and for penning the controversial and awesome KIDS, Korine hasn't made a movie since 1999. Mister Lonely is his first feature-length film since abandoning the extremely strange Fight Harm project, which followed his attempts to provoke strangers into real-life street fights. Since then, he's made a string of short films and music videos, directed a TV documentary about friend and collaborator David Blaine and been banned from "The Late Show" for shoving Meryl Streep.

If that doesn't sound like an interesting night at the movies, we don't know what does.

Mister Lonely will have its U.S. Premiere on Saturday March 8th at the Alamo Ritz as part of the SXSW Film Festival. For more info, check out the Film Threat / B-Side SXSW Guide.

Yeah, for some reason there's no domestic trailer yet. Though it's an English-language film.
