Since 2001, the Rock 'n' Roll camp for girls based in Portland has instructed young women on the finer points of learning to play instruments and rocking out, while also helping to give their students a positive self-image and can-do attitude.

The camp turned out to be such a success that it spawned sister-camps all over, including right here in Austin. And the attention the original received was enough to convince filmmakers Arne Johnson and Shane King that they needed to document it.

While the resulting documentary Girls Rock! is about the camp, it's also about the irrepressible personalities of four of its pupils, who over the course of their session at camp, learn music, join bands, and finally play a concert for seven hundred people. The film features interviews with camp employees, supporters like Sleater-Kinney's Carrie Brownstein, and the girls themselves.

The performance tonight is a full four days before the film launches nationwide, and preceding it Fabi and Claire, two graduates of Austin's camp (and members of Code Rainbow!) will be performing.
