Austinist Weekend Music Preview: Austin Avant-Garde + FuckEmos + more

Kick off this weekend early on Thursday at Antone’s with music from Black Joe Lewis, Bankrupt and the Borrowers, and The Best Love In Town on the special occasion of The Versatile Syndicate’s “Launch Party.” The entity is now open for business, and their agenda is to aid any artist in pursuing their dreams and professional development via booking/tour management, consulting, live production, and so on. This event is a part of the Austin Music Foundation’s Love Austin Music Month and cover for AMF members is $5. The rest of us mere mortals can get in for $10. The shindig also marks AMF's 6th Birthday; free cake and food (courtesy of Whole Foods Market) and free 2008 She Rocks Calendars while the goodies last.

Austin Avant-Garde: A Multimedia Art Experience” (presented by GAT5) at The Mohawk is another stellar event on tap this Thursday. A three-pronged attack should entertain all comers: musical guests include Golden Arm Trio and Govinda, the art of Amelia Winger-Bearskin and Ricardo Acevedo, among many others will be on display, and lastly, fashion choices come from a variety of local institutions including Cream Vintage, Fetish, and Wet Salon and Studio. Plus Team Fabrication will be on hand to furnish the venue with dance beats, fashion advice, and what not.

Ghostland Observatory’s eagerly anticipated CD Release show is this Friday at Austin Music Hall. Shake your booty to new dance floor fodder off Robotique Majestique like “No Place For Me”, “Heavy Heart”, and “Dancin’ On My Grave.” If you don't believe the GLO hype, head on over to Elysium for a different brand of electro-rock with Cry Blood Apache’s bizarre concoctions.

Information on more weekend shows after the jump!

If you’re leaning towards old school California punk or straight up Texas rock, Red River St. offers up No Use For A Name and NOFX at Stubb’s, and Young Heart Attack and Amplified Heat at Emo’s. The latter gig is a part of The Ugly Beats’ Leap Year Party.

Buttercup at The Mohawk and CcanopyY at Club de Ville round off Friday’s Red River entertainment. The Buttercup gig marks the release of their new 8-song EP, The Head Sits Upside Down on the Top of the Head. Leatherbag, recently featured on Le Diamant Brut, opens.

Hard rock, Southern rock, punk rock, heavy metal, and everything in between is ripe for the pickin’ on Saturday evening. Two local acts that may not be on your radar lately (but are an essential part of Austin’s music history) reunite for special gigs this weekend -- FuckEmos at, well, Emo’s, and SINIS at Flamingo Cantina bring back memories and a rockin’ good time to loyal old fans and unsuspecting new ones. SINIS actually plays the same venue Friday evening as well but we recommend the killer line-up on Saturday when Full Stride, Big Balls and Dixie Witch join the party.

New Disaster at Emo’s Lounge and SuperHeavyGoatAss at Headhunters offer further choices for those about to rock. The Vandals bring their brand of California punk to Red 7 with support from Lower Class Brats. Yuppie Pricks open with their usual shenanigans and songs like “Hummer In My Hummer”, “Fuck You, I’m Rich”, “Coke Party”, and “Donkey Show.” Yikes.

Lambert’s hosts a killer show on Saturday with a current set of local legends providing the entertainment. Sample the latest set of tracks from Bill Baird’s (of Sound Team fame) {{{ SUNSET }}} project, but only after enjoying melodies and contemplating heartache courtesy of Chris Simpson and his shape-shifting outfit Zookeeper. Leading up to that gig, spend your early Saturday evening hours with New Jersey’s Ours, who once brought us the brilliant tune “Sometimes”. They open up for Marilyn Manson in the vicinity, at Austin Music Hall.

The Party (presented by Central Booking) returns to The Mohawk on Saturday as well with Nature, :: SOB3R ::, Select, and Prince Klassen piloting the beats as always. Annie Ray (recently featured in XL Weekly) will have her now familiar photo booth on the premises so stop on by! An alternative dance party can be found at Beauty Bar with the latest installment of MILK. Abominatron and dj Orion will be at the helm for this one but get their early to catch Toko-Ri Get High's garage-rock goodies.

Wrap up your weekend at Room 710 with blues-rock from Sabbath Crow and Amplified Heat.

P.S. Austinist Weekend Music Preview is taking a break for two weeks. See you after SXSW!

Somehow, we're off the Ist List, which isn't surprising since we're not even listed in the Chron band listings at live music venues. Which isn't surprising because we only have about 35 bands a week playing our stage. So here's a bit more of the happenings at Room 710:

Friday, 2.29: Leap Year Formal w/ Mr. Lewis & the Funeral Five, the Black Irish, Bus Stop Stallions, and Bones; with a banjo, bluegrass happy hour set by Fish Fry Bingo. Free food, and we're dressing to the 29s.

Saturday, 3.1: Jucifer with the Roller, The Devil and the Sea, and Canyon of the Skull. Which means a stage full of amps and a hot lady guitar with her guy on the drums. We do sell ear plugs.

And, yes, the Dicks are indeed returning to Room 710 on Thursday, March 6. Playing along are The Chumps, Summer of Blood, Roger's Porn Collection, and Shootin' Pains.

Check out our MySpace page for posters and links to bands: myspace.com/room_710.
