SXSW News & Updates: Official Showcases, Unofficial Torrents, NPR Music, & Day Show Dilemmas
Oh NPR Music, how we love you so. Not only do you bring us constant live music sweetness via your awesome All Songs Considered show, you also come to our fine town during SXSW and turn our world on its head! NPR Music presents three incredible concerts this year during the festival -- two official evening time showcases, and one incredible day show. All three shows will be streamed live on their site and eventually be available for constant enjoyment via their archives. NPR Member stations including KUT Austin and KEXP Seattle will provide quality coverage from Austin all festival long as well.
On opening night on the 12th, Stubb’s hosts that one band from Athens called R.E.M. who put out such classic records like Murmur, Reconstruction Of The Fables, and Automatic For The People. The band will be previewing material off their upcoming Accelerate album on this special night. On Thursday the 13th, NPR Music shifts its focus to Austin Music Hall where luminaries like My Morning Jacket and Yo La Tengo will grace the stage and the airwaves.
If that wasn’t enough, NPR Music also presents a day show at The Parish earlier on the 13th. Our beloved Swedish imports Shout Out Louds and Jens Lekman, along with Vampire Weekend, Adele, Yeasayer, and Bon Iver make for a mouth-watering line-up. Resistance is futile.
Follow the jump for information on other stellar day shows that have been announced recently!
- The 3rd Annual Pitchfork/Windish Austin Bash at Emo’s on the 14th with Bon Iver, No Age, Jay Reatard, Yeasayer, Fuck Buttons, and A Place To Bury Strangers.
- The HotFreaks! shindigs return to The Mohawk and Club de Ville on the 14th and 15th featuring music from British Sea Power, White Denim, Evangelicals, Peter Morén, Peelander-Z, Winter Hinterland, Film School, and Jens Lekman.
- Little Radio and Noisepop 2008 bring us two days of quality acts at Red Eyed Fly on the 12th and 13th -- check out the likes of The Raveonettes, The Black Angels, The Octopus Project, and Brothers And Sisters, all for free!
- The Onion, The A.V. Club, etc. take over Emo's on the 13th with music from Tapes 'N Tapes, Tokyo Police Club, Shout Out Louds, and The Stills.
- Waterloo Park is home to the 2nd Mess With Texas on the 15th, presented by Transmission Entertainment, among others. (A location change for the event probably based on the massive lines outside Red 7 during last year’s extravaganza.) Comedians such as Eugene Mirman and Janeane Garofalo complement an unreal line-up of musical acts -- The Breeders, Pissed Jeans, Shearwater, Simian Mobile Disco, Fucked Up, Kimya Dawson, Gil Mantera’s Party Dream. We could go on and on. Matt & Kim, Howlin Rain, ok time to stop.

Is anyone at the austinist going to compile a list of the official gigs around SXSW? As a local its one of the best things...
It looks like no repeat of ATXREME for this year which is a shame. With a day job, much of SXSW official music is out of bounds, and even buying a wristband is unattractive to attend only in the evenings.

Yuk, apologies for the triplicate post, I was getting server errors here and did make a dumb mistake in the first one, forgetting the key "un"... d'oh, been a long week!
Triman -- to answer your questions :) yes, we'll launch our SXSW guide next sometime.
Make sure you check out Done Waiting as well. They always have a ton of information.
Why would you rely on Austinist for the information? Go to www.donewaiting.com or even better, www.showlistaustin.com Show List Austin shows all the free shows for the whole fest. Anyone attending SXSW should know this site.
so how do we go about getting tickets to either of the NPR shows?
Show up early and hope they are selling them at the door. Most venues will do this if they don't expect to fill with badges and wristbands; and even then some will try to have some door tickets. The day show should be open to the public, first come first served.
