The Black and White Years are not merely a group of affable gents - as Austinist discovered in
a recent interview - they're also way into creating compelling pop morsels that eschew immediate categorization and confound otherwise severely judgmental blog-journalists. Over the past four years, they've grown from a drum-machine accompanied duo into a fully-fleshed out quartet, honing their influences and developing a sound that is both subtly adventurous and undeniably distinct. Tonight at
Stubb's they will release their first non-kitchen-produced full-length to a chorus of greedy fingers and ready messenger bags. Considering they nailed down none other than Talking Head
Jerry Harrison to produce the affair (as well as some of
Tom Petty's crew), they stand ready to light the fuse with clout to spare. What's more, the album is eponymous, and that never goes out of style.
Local shred stalwarts Ume kickoff the brouhaha with their blistering take on what Steve Albini would listen to in the hospital after a humdinger of a car accident. That's definitely a compliment, and you'd had better be in the hospital if you plan on missing this show.
