Monochrome is having a big night this Saturday, with the rebellious flower-punk of Atlanta’s Black Lips coming together with our own freewheelin’ sons of garage rock, White Denim.
Were we to try and create a more exciting, wild night of unbridled free-rock exhibitionism, we would fail, badly. Black Lips have a reputation that precedes them, mostly thanks to wild live shows (see last year’s document of a particularly raucous Tijuana show, Los Valientes del Mundo Nuevo) and a sound that cuts through the flack and into the sticky core of joyous exhibitionism. The band appear to be skipping SXSW this year – after playing a record twelve times in three days last year – so this is your one chance to see them, at least for a few months.
White Denim need no introduction, but we’ll give them one anyway – their jittery and blues-fueled jams have made dopamine receptors pop in pleasure, and for the last year or so have been turning heads both at home and all over. They’ve played CMJ, Fun Fun Fun, and now they’re joining the Black Lips for what should be an amazing bill. White Denim have a new EP coming out online on RCRD LBL, so look for free mp3s on that website.
Psychedelic rockers and Austin locals The Strange Boys will open. Their “7 entitled Nothing out on Dusty Medical records (a label who also put out a Black Lips live album in 2005) looks all sold out, but maybe the band will bring a few copies with them on Saturday night, or at least news of a new offering.
