Austinist Previews SXSW: Zizek Showcase @ Ninety Proof Lounge (March 13th)

Mid-March, or SXSW rather, is a time when Warehouse District bars turn into rock venues and 6th St. meat markets become home to once-in-a-lifetime opportunities to see that next big thing at a smallish venue. We’ve never made it to Ninety Proof Lounge but all that might change when Zizek comes to the hotspot that is “upscale without the attitude” on March 13th. Zizek is a regular shindig in Buenos Aires that provides artists an opportunity to display their genius -- reggae, hip-hop, cumbia, folk, dancehall, electro, you name it, they got it. The intent is to provide an Argentine slant on the various genres and showcase the talent that lies within the country. And of course, party hard, dance the night away, and take the show on the road!

Amidst its North American tour, Zizek comes to SXSW on the afore-mentioned date, bringing a variety of DJs, MCs, producers, and what not to demonstrate their musical chops to the music industry. Gaby Kerpel and Julián Gómez previously worked together on Fuerzabruta -- they unite to bring their “cumbia/reggaetón DJ set” to our fine city at this show as the cumulative force that is King Coya & El Trip Selector. Tremor (or Leonardo Martinelli) has composed music for movies for a good while now; his current moniker’s distinct sound combines organic Argentine folk with synthetic beats and random noises generated by everyday objects (including the beloved dot-matrix printer.) Quite intriguing, we must admit.

Axel Krygier (Axel K Soundsystem) utilizes his skill and knowledge of a wide variety of instruments to conjure up soothing, down tempo electronica. In contrast, Frikstailers’ experimental melting pot of beats and bleeps is high energy dance floor fodder; “Foonkie Boogie”, besides its awesome title, is a start-stop medley of assorted samples and chirping, chiming sounds that will have you shaking your booty in no time. Heck, they even remix Justice’s D.A.N.C.E.

El Remolón and ORO11 round off this amazing bill.

Pro-Tips: This venue is extremely close to the SXSW festival time headquarters that is the Austin Covention Center; check in with your badge to access the various amenities available, or you should be able to get some Wi-Fi action in the lounge upon entering the building.

Leading up to this event, you can also pick from a variety of day shows in the vicinity on Red River St. -- try The Raveonettes and local psychedelic outfit The Black Angels at the Little Radio / Noisepop party at Red Eyed Fly or check out Tapes 'N Tapes, The Stills, and Shout Out Louds at the The Onion's shindig at Emo's. Both day events are free and RSVP is not required (as far as we know!)

Or start off your 13th morning bright 'n early at Progress Coffee just east of I-35 on 5th St. with an 11 a.m. performance by New York's Cheyenne. (Other acts playing this Progress Showcase include Balmorhea at 4 p.m. and Zookeeper at 9 p.m.)
