Arts & Entertainment: Industry News

Art

The Austin Museum of Art (AMOA) released its plans for a new home over next to Republic Square Park in downtown Austin. It's supposed to be completed by 2011. Check out the pretty picture! /// Greece's new Acropolis Museum will open this September. The structure will be built at the foot of the Acropolis of Athens.

Books

Timothy Egan from the NY Times responds to Steve Jobs' comment last month that "nobody reads anymore." /// The Canadian book market is evidently kind of lame. /// Many libraries - in attempts to automate their electronic catalogs and databases -- are getting sick of working with limited proprietary software and are now creating their own open-source programs.

Film

The top 5 highest grossing films this Oscar season have seen a "bump" in revenues - an increase of over 100%. /// Ouch. According to a recently released report, the Writer's Strike cost Hollywood approximately $2.5 billion. /// New York state health officials are trying to make ratings on movies showing people smoking more restrictive for minors. Fascism? Oh! Yes, please!

Music

Okay, this is awesome: An RIAA training video has leaked. It's apparently a training video for U.S. prosecutors that shows them "how to handle" music piracy cases. If you haven't heard of the RIAA, they're the organization that goes around suing old ladies and 16 year olds for having pirated mp3s on their hard drives. /// Watch out! The Chinese music industry is out of control! /// More news on MySpace's new "one-stop-shop" music website concept, originally covered by paidContent.
