New Movie Releases: Spiderwick Chronicles, Jumper and More

The Spiderwick Chronicles A big-screen adaptation of Holly Black and Tony Diterlizzi's popular children's book series, The Spiderwick Chronicles follows three kids named Simon, Mallory and Jared as they try to keep a magical book from falling into the hands of some unsavory goblins.

We saw five minutes of this way back in September, and it seemed just fine. We suppose that if you're into magic and children and movies based on children's books, you'll probably do well with this.

Definitely Maybe
This 90s-nostalgia dramedy stars Ryan Reynolds as an ad exec in New York who recounts the three major loves of his life to his daughter (Little Miss Sunshine cutie pie Abigal Breslin) in order to make her guess which one was her mother. That sounds like a crappy thing to do to a kid--almost as crappy as making a kid appear in a movie named after an Oasis album.--Molly McCommons [Trailer] [Website]

Jumper
An affectless Hayden Christensen stars as a dude who discovers he has a gift for teleportation. In the parlance of this movie, he's a Jumper. After much hedonistic tomfoolery in and around the space-time continuum, he learns that there are others who share in his ability to cruise through wormholes, as well as an evil consortium bent on destroying the Jumpers. The ever-reliable Samuel L. Jackson rocks a questionable bleached blonde 'do as the villain, and the whole thing looks about one floor-dusting leather trench vest away from Wachowski Brothers Lite.--Molly McCommons [Trailer] [Website]

Little Chenier: A Cajun Story
Little Chenier follows bait shop owner Beaux Dupuis and his mentally handicapped brother Pemon as they eke out a living on the Louisiana coast. The two live a simple life until Pemon is accused of a crime and Beaux is forced to protect him against all odds.

Completed just 31 days before Hurricane Rita devastated the Louisiana coastline, the film was shot in and around the real-life community of Little Chenier in Cameron Parish. A portion of the profits from ticket sales will benefit “Rita Remembered”, a charity which raises money for those affected by Hurricane Rita.—Matt Smith [Trailer] [Website]
