Sinus Show Members Reunite for Back to the Future

For the first time in over a year, erstwhile Sinus Show members Owen Egerton, John Erler and Joe Parsons are back together, skewering bad films like some kind of movie mocking Voltron. And this time, they're taking dead aim at Robert Zemeckis' goofy sci-fi adventure Back to the Future.

If last weekend's sold out shows are any indication, Egerton's return to movie lampooning is big news for Sinus fans.

"I had been lobbying to get [Owen back] on board ever since the breakup of Sinus," Erler recently told Austinist. "He and I make a great team. We've got some classic comedy mismatch traits: short vs. tall, fuzzy vs. bald, manic vs. subdued. We also have a great deal of shared sensibilities too. It's a great match. And with Joe as a third I couldn't ask for a better team."

But why now? Egerton explained, "When Sinus stopped its Alamo run, it was tough on everyone involved. John, Jerm, and I all had different opinions about what should be happening, what was right and wrong. Some angry words, some difficult times. And I love both those guys, so it was hard. After a year it feels right to start moving past all that and look forward. This might sound a little Oprahy, but doing this show feels healing."

When asked if the reunion was permanent, Erler replied, "[Owen] said he would only be doing Back to the Future with us, which I told him was fine. What he doesn't know yet is that I've scheduled us to do Back to the Future continuously at the Alamo for the next 2 years. Seriously though, he's expressed interest in doing occasional gigs with Master Pancake after this one. He mentioned that he'd be especially excited about doing Planet of the Apes. He would be so good in a skit as Dr. Zeus. He wouldn't even need any make-up. Just one of those weird pleather jackets."

In the meantime, fans have three more weekends to enjoy Back to the Future with the near-original Sinus lineup (missing member Jerm Pollet is currently the host of The Belmont's Moonlight Cinema series, which will return as a permanent fixture on Monday nights shortly after SXSW).

"Back to the Future is an excellent movie," Egerton said. "Just beautiful pop fun glory-goo. We mock it out of love, like you might give a kid brother a noogie."
