Austinist Show Preview: A Joy Division Cover Band + more @ Chain Drive

Chain Drive’s Wednesday night gigs continue this week with a quality triple bill along with their usual mid-week domestic beer price of $1.75. Chromosome Damage bleed black with an ominous soundtrack of electro-goth-metal while The Devil Bat soften things up a bit with folk tales accentuated by psychedelic six-strings. The latter act boasts members from bands such as Power Snatch, Dogshit Rangers and ST 37, while their Lingers Like a Ghost EP (on Sister Skull Records) was produced by Gretchen Phillips.

Phillips heads up A Joy Division Cover Band, which is (you guessed it) a tribute to the legendary British act from the late '70s. Joy Division thankfully continues to fall within the gone-but-not-forgotten realms of pop culture with a mid-'90s tribute album (A Means to an End) and the recent movie Control both paying respect to the iconic act. Phillips’ vocal prowess is surprisingly akin to the late Ian Curtis’ monotonous drawl and her crew is equally adept at transcribing the Manchester act’s gloom n’ doom to perfection for live audiences today. And their set list is comprised heavily of selections from 1979’s brilliant Unknown Pleasures record! Don’t miss it!
