Ho hum. Another Friday, another round of Whole Foods-bashing on Austinist.
I wouldn't necessarily count this as Whole Foods bashing by Austinist. Clicking on the link points out that the Chronicle is doing the bashing as the original publisher of the article.
And, it's probably a good thing that someone watches organizations such as Whole Foods to ensure that they REALLY aren't evil.
How about paying attention to the substance of the criticism - people being paid dirt wages when Whole Foods can a) afford to pay more and b) bills itself as the socially responsible choice for liberals everywhere.
The fact is that Whole Foods is at the cutting edge - and I expect that if enough of their customer base communicate that this is an important issue, changes will come.
This image of Whole Foods is such a joke too; the chairman is a libertarian ideologue who would like significantly LESS regulation in this country in ways that would obviously be negatives for foodies.
Yo I wrote that post and at the conference Firday evening there was a comment made that the Whole Foods shareholder mtg was going to be at the Austin Hilton sometime in March. I couldnt verify but Benitez did say that they were trying to get a seat at that table but would not mind at all if they had to stand outside the mtg in protest. Give a holler to the Student/ Farmworker Alliance for more info on that maybe.
