New Movie Releases: Spiral, In Bruges, Vince Vaughn
Fantastic Fest fave Spiral is the follow up to another Fantastic Fest fave, Adam Green's schlocky-but-fun horror flick Hatchet. We haven't seen Spiral yet (it's one of the few movies we couldn't quite fit in at FF this year), but word is that it's more suspense than horror.
Spiral follows a lonely, nerdy telemarketer who sketches portraits as a hobby. But when he begins sketching a hot new ladyfriend (Amber Tamblyn), shocking secrets from his past begin to emerge.
If the reviews on the Fantastic Fest B-Side site are any indication, Spiral is quite good. Of course, you have to keep in mind that those comments are from hardcore genre fans, so your tastes may or may not gel. Try the trailer out and go from there. [Trailer] [Website]
In Bruges
Colin Farrell and Ralph Fiennes star as two Irish hitmen hiding out in the tiny Belgian city of Bruges after a botched job. But when the young, excitable Ray (Farrell) grows bored of laying low, his brash, big city attitude threatens to blow the duo's cover.
Directed by Martin McDonagh (whose short Six Shooter won an Oscar in 2006), In Bruges opened this year's Sundance Film Festival to mixed reviews. The common complaint seems to be that McDonagh doesn't seamlessly mix the comedic, dramatic and action-oriented bits into one enjoyable whole. But who knows... maybe there's enough funny stuff in there to redeem it. [Trailer (NSFW)] [Website]
Vince Vaughn's Wild West Comedy Show
The title is fairly self-explanatory here. This doc follows Vince Vaughn as he leads four unknown stand-up comedians on a 30 day marathon tour across America (including a stop at Austin's Paramount Theatre).
Vaughn is the kind of guy you either love or hate. Personally, we think his performances in Swingers and Made have earned him a huge amount of slack--which is good, because if the trailer is any indication, Wild West Comedy Show needs all the slack it can get. Are those really the funniest bits they could round up for a trailer? When the best line is delivered by an audience member, you know you're in trouble. [Trailer] [Website]
Fool’s Gold
Matthew McConaughey and Kate Hudson are back! And apparently, McConaughey still doesn't own a shirt. Dude... send us your address and we'll provide you an Austinist tee. It's been cold out lately!
Not that it matters what Fool's Gold is about, but it looks kinda like a poor man's Romancing the Stone. The critics are pretty much unanimous on this one: skip it.

Welcome Home Roscoe Jenkins
Nothing Martin Lawrence does will ever be as funny as this. We're pretty convinced that he's not even an actor--he's actually a brilliantly subversive conceptual artist. [Trailer] [Website]
