Skating, art and music have always been a big part of Warren McKinney’s life. The Austinite is sharing his passion for all three this weekend during Art on Deck, a special exhibit of rare skateboards, a skate demo and concerts at United States Art Authority.

“I started collecting for the nostalgia - every skater remembers their first board,” said McKinney, who has been collecting boards from all over the world for about six years. “I've always appreciated the way skateboard graphics reflect the culture of the times and are produced where the first thing to get destroyed is the art.”

McKinney’s skateboards range from the 1960s to the present and include one-of-a-kind prototypes, signed limited editions and foreign releases.

An opening reception for Art on Deck will be at 6 p.m. Friday at United States Art Authority. Live music will be provided by DJ Chicken George, The Golden Boys, Opposite Day, Split Hoof, Mercyy, Blackholicus and Crapulence. On Saturday the exhibit will open again at noon, with a skateboarding demo hosted by Find and Grind Skate Shop. Music will begin at 9 p.m. with Death Hell Battletank, The Flood, The Dickins and Sober Daze.

The money raised at the event will benefit Austin EcoSchool, a nonprofit “green” elementary which is being forced to relocate from Del Curto Road because of a condo development.

I heard that "sPOON" may make an unscheduled appearance at around 11 pm.....keep it on the low down though so it won't be too crowded....

Those Hosoi Hammerheads are ridiculously sweet.

I used to skate a black one my neighbor gave me after the nose split. And then I huffed around on the Hosoi ramp deck with motobilts, which weighted fiftybajillion pounds, pushing along with my used three-sizes-too-big Gen1 Air Jordans that were duct taped together because I loved them too much to let them go.

This show's worth it just for the nostalgia.

Thanks for posting the info about this show. I stopped by the gallery last night to preview the opening. Massive. Warren has more decks than anyone else in Austin (stores included). Many are ultra-obscure that few people have ever seen before. Here are some photos of the preparations:

If you know someone interested in skateboarding or just youth-culture art, this is the event they need to hit.
