While a great deal of lip service is paid to “Keeping Austin Weird,” how did Austin manage to get so weird, anyway, and how far have we strayed from that great flashpoint of weirdness, the sixties? This special installment of Music Mondays at the Alamo Drafthouse will answer all this and more, with a presentation of the film Dirt Road to Psychedelia by director Scott Conn.
Dirt Road to Psychedelia looks back on a time when Austin was on the rise, and counter-culture youths were flocking to Texas’ most liberal city to participate in all of the art, music, and recreational drugs usage it had to offer. Chock full of interviews and Super 8 footage, the documentary looks at the sixties through Austin’s eyes, and features an in-depth look at the 13th Floor Elevators, Janis Joplin and all of the other big names that made this city what it is today. Our own psychedelic vanguards The Black Angels will join Conn in introducing the film.

I caught this at Beerland a few months ago, definitely worth checking out if you love Austin!
