Tonight’s art party marks the opening of the new exhibit, The Virgin, Saints, and Angels, which is probably not your regular crowd to hang out with on a Friday evening.
The Virgin, Saints, and Angels: South American Paintings 1600–1825 from the Thoma Collection includes 55 heavenly paintings from South America which were created by village artisans, centuries ago. They depict richly detailed illustrations of the Virgin Mary and other saints and angels.
Other B scene action tonight will include gallery tours and a cash bar and snacks. Expect Latin American soul and funk tunes provided by The Reverend Get Down from KVRX's Afro-Boogaloo Soul Revue, plus Latin American folk trio Chaski.
Also on display at the Blanton is Jorge Macchi: The Anatomy of Melancholy. The first comprehensive U.S. exhibit of this influential Latin American artist, Anatomy of Melancholy features more than 40 works ranging from video installations to newspaper collages created from the 90s to the present.
