SXSW News & Rumor Updates: Willie, Van, And 350 Bands

  • Classic Rock, Classic Country: As per usual, Willie Nelson will play two nights at The Backyard for both locals avoiding SXSW and tourists willing to skip one night of showcases to see Austin's most enduring music legend. Willie's shows are tentatively scheduled for 3/14 and 3/15, and will go on sale sometime in February. In another move designed to access some tourist dollars, Direct Events has announced a relatively intimate show with Van Morrison at the Austin Music Hall on Tuesday, March 11. Van the Man apparently hasn't heard about the looming recession, as tickets are priced from $102 to a whopping $257.
  • KCRW Jumps In: California public radio stalwart KCRW has announced the acts for their 2008 showcase on 3/12 via Done Waiting's SXSW blog. The lucky few are The Duke Spirit, Ting Tings, Division Day, Salt & Samovar, Goldspot, and Jesca Hoop. Given the track record KCRW has amassed for finding emerging talent over the years, one should take their recommendations to heart.
  • They Left Their Heart In Austin: The City of San Francisco is sponsoring both a day and evening showcase for their acts playing SX. These shows at Bourbon Rocks will feature Film School, Sean Hayes, elephone, Magic Bullets, The Dodos, Love Like Fire, The Loquat, The Heavenly States, Mud, Built For The Sea, Cold Hot Crash, Sugar & Gold, and several more.
  • They Fry Everything, And That's Awesome: The perennial favorite known as the Full Irish Breakfast is calling itself a brunch this year, but the talent and venue remain the same. The 3/13 day party at B.D. Riley's stars (Snow Patrol collaborator) Iain Archer, Delorentos, Paddy Casey, Oppenheimer, Channel One, Cathy Davey, Fight Like Apes, Laura Izabor, and The Distractors. RSVP early to this one for guest list admission.

Other names recently confirmed for SX include:
  • M. Ward and Zooey Deschanel: Yes, that's the same Zooey Deschanel from Elf and Winter Passing. She and the hugely talented M. Ward have recorded an album together, and they will preview it at the Merge Records showcase on 3/14.
  • Annuals: The precocious indie-rock combo returns after a triumphant 2007 appearance.
  • Billy Bragg: England's best protest singer visits the US at a time when there's a lot of reasons for a political song or two.
  • Cut Copy: Australian dance party! Cut Copy will bring their intelligent electro-dance-pop sounds over for a rare US appearance.
  • Paul Kelly: Australia's beloved singer-songwriter returns to Austin.
  • Duffy: Dubbed the next Amy Winehouse by some and the next Dusty Springfield by others, it will be tough to avoid the hype surrounding this young Welsh singer.
  • Rogue Wave: They were just in Austin last week, but Rogue Wave will return in March to play for the out-of-towners who love the California band's precise indie-pop melodies.

New lineup additions were a bit slow this week, but Austinist's list currently features 350+ bands confirmed for SXSW. As always, we thank Done Waiting, Austin360, and BrooklynVegan for help with lineup announcements. Until next week...

considering the reports about horrible views and sounds at the Austin Music Hall, they may have egg on their face for this pricing structure for Van Morrison.

Direct Events has been making some modifications to the sound and structure to fix the sound. The review that you linked was a first show at that venue. They're installing delay speakers to help with the sound, among other things.

Van tickets starting at a mere $102 and rising to $257? Don't forget to add in the "handling charges", etc.

Uhhhhhh. I think I'll pass. A couple of years ago he apparently had a clock on stage so he could give his obligatory timed set and exit asap. He thinks he's Sinatra now anyway. "Have I Told You Lately I Love You" done Vegas Style etc.

"Van the Man" has turned into "Van the Money Grabbing Man." Ouch!

These ticket prices are absolutely ridiculas.

From the photo it appears Van Morrison is actually Jon Voight with sunglasses.

I wonder if we'll find a chewed pencil next to the shot clock on stage.

For $100 totes, not a piece, I'll stand on the street and fart Brown Eyed Girl into a microphone.
