Austinist Show Preview: Balmorhea and more at the Salvage Vanguard

Church of the Friendly Ghost Night at the Salvage Vanguard Theater
Friday, January 25
Salvage Vanguard Theatre ()
$5, 8pm, BYOB
[info]

The Church of the Friendly Ghost’s forte is bringing its audience a range of new sounds, and this Friday night is no exception as four Texas experimental musicians will take the stage at the Salvage Vanguard Theater paired with artist LORI 16MM, who will be projecting a film and visual installation.

Doors open at 8 p.m., and first up will be A New Low, a noise project originally from Wichita and which now can call Austin its new home. Following this act will be the mature-sounding Gary Barftits, whose jumbled recordings should appeal to anyone with a somewhat warped sense of humor and melody. This particular performance will feature Gary Barftits member Sam, also of Night Viking, paired with a violinist.

Bright Duplex is next, and is a duo comprised of members Vanessa Rosetto and Matt Armistead. Unsurprisingly, it’s pretty far out. And last, headlining is the band Balmorhea, an evocative, calmly beautiful project that has attracted the attention of the Western Vinyl label, which has also put out music by musical renegades The Dirty Projectors and Chas. Mtn. With LORI 16MM’s flickering visual accompaniments, this performance stands out even in our flourishing live music community.
