Straight outta Scandinavia, the jazz quintet Atomic are stopping in at the historic and more recently renovated Victory Grill for a performance this evening.

Formerly a haven to black musicians on their way though the “chitlin’ circuit” that ran through the South, the Victory Grill has a storied history, and continues to feature music you may not hear anywhere else.

Atomic is a relatively new presence on the jazz scene, with their first album Feet Music debuting in 2002. More recently, they released a three-disc set of live material (!) called The Bikini Tapes in 2005, and are planning a new release for this spring. The music is often fast-paced and pleasurably frenetic. Even a casual listen to one of their songs betrays impressive musicianship, and hints at a fantastic live performance.
