Allen Demling has announced that he will run for election to the Place 1 seat in 2008 (the seat currently held by Lee Leffingwell, who is also running). The election is Saturday, May 10, 2008.

Allen will be competing in the 2nd Annual Misprint Magazine Beard and Moustache competition at Club DeVille on Saturday, February 9th. He also has a fundraising event scheduled for February 22nd at the Scoot Inn.

According to his press release, Mr. Demling believes that the current council is leading the city in the wrong direction and destroying the essence of its character. He feels they place too much emphasis on corporate interests, increasing the tax base, and the short-sighted needs of developers. Allen believes the vibrant culture of Austin—the people, the institutions, the arts community, and the nightlife—is Austin's greatest asset and is threatened by current city leadership. He is a member of the Austin Cycling Association, the Austin Regional Group of the Sierra Club, the Travis Audubon Society, and the Human Rights Campaign. You can read more about his positions on various issues here and here.

oh man, he owns a galaxie 500... he's got my vote right there

  • barbarosa

Austin needs more people riding bikes and growing beards. He's got my vote, action speaks louder than words.

  • Tarvin

I totally agree with him, however.

  • Tarvin

I love it when newcomers complain about what they've made Austin become.

Whats wrong with being a young idealistic crackpot with a sweet beard? At least the dude is younger then the dinosaurs and isn't in bed with developers.

    Save the Brohawk!

"Allen Demling is a true Austin original...Allen has been living and working in Austin as a mechanical engineer for four years"

    ahahahahahahaha!!!

  • hoopla

Awesome, a person that is stepping forward to challenge a spot on a city council that seems to be slowly eroding the culture of Austin and of course you have the malevolent coup that quickly follows calling them "a crackpot." Condo anyone?

  • Benj

I think, with Leslie nd Jennifer Gale, we're a market where even novelty act outsiders need to put up or shut up-- provide hearty, realistic--dare i say it?-- policy-- otherwise they're dead in the water, beard or no.

  • LoudMouth

We need more crackpots on the city council.

  • LoudMouth

    Ha ha ha ha ha!

    The crackpot laughs.

    Oh! The irony.

  • AsherBaruch

Barely coherent? I've read my post twice, and it still makes me giggle.

Anyway, to break it down for you, calling someone a crackpot on a public forum leads the public to suggest that the pot may be calling the kettle black.

That, and Brian Nelson has a very sturdy beard.

  • mdahmus

Asher, your complaint is barely coherent - but my best guess is that you're whining about how often I comment here - which is truly precious, given how few of the articles here I ever comment on.

    Don't ever change.

  • AsherBaruch

Mdahmus has his version of a crackpot, and I've got mine: a person who likes to yell and scream about any and every issue that somebody else has an opinion on while viewing a public, civic minded website/blog.

You'd be even crackier, M1KE, if you are right now sitting in your basement with your pants down around your ankles, foaming at the mouth as you read this.

I wish Demling luck. Although I've got my money on Brian Nelson winning the beard contest.

  • mdahmus

Demling is a crackpot - completely ignorant of the fact that the city council has only an indirect influence on transit, for one. Similar to the student council president who promises he'll get an extra recess period added to the day if you only vote for him...
