SXSW News & Rumor Updates: From Country To Punk, Here's 254 Bands Playing SX
This year's SXSW Music lineup seems to be taking shape a bit more quickly than last year, as bands have taken it upon themselves to announce showcases publicly before the official list release by SX organizers. This is a departure from prior years, but since festival officials aren't complaining, we assume they're happy to let the hype build as the acts trickle in. This week's top thirteen additions:
- Dolly Parton: One of country music's legends plays a rare date in Austin.
- X: John Doe and his cronies will play SX as the kickoff to a spring US tour.
- Simian Mobile Disco: Look for the British dance party action here at both an official showcase and the Vice day party.
- British Sea Power: The critical favorite returns with a new album which is drawing lots of Neon Bible comparisons.
- Q-Tip: A Tribe Called Quest's wordsmith bolsters the bigger than usual hip-hop lineup this year.
- Dizzee Rascal: Pitchfork favorite and UK grime pioneer is now confirmed for the festival.
- N.E.R.D.: Pharrell and Chad turn up to preview new material.
- Nortec Collective: Mexico's electronic wizards head north for an Austin visit.
- David Banner: Rapper, actor, and producer Banner could be doing all sorts of stuff at SX.
- Shelby Lynne: Alt.country's Lynne will showcase a new album of cover songs.
- Jens Lekman: Sweden's soft-spoken wonder and Austinist favorite returns after wowing a Parish audience last fall.
- Eugene Mirman: Avant-garde stand up and "Flight Of The Conchords" actor Mirman returns to MC multiple events at the festival.
- Constantines: Their new label, Arts & Crafts, has just released a 7" by the band, and though there's no word of a new full-length, they'll kick off a tour in Austin.
They're playing where?: Some venue announcements have also slipped in to this week's batch of press releases: My Morning Jacket will play the newly re-opened (though acoustically sketchy) Austin Music Hall on 3/13, perhaps (but not for sure) with Yo La Tengo in tow. And while dates conflict, multiple sources are saying that R.E.M. will headline at Stubb's during the fest. For you No Depression readers, Bloodshot's annual throwdown will hit the Red Eyed Fly.
The lineup as we know it (about 254 names at the moment) appears after the jump. As per usual, we thank Done Waiting, BrooklynVegan, and Austin360 for their help with additions to this list. As always, if you're in a band that is coming for the festival, or know of one that has confirmed, please email us: music@austinist.com.

Not confirmed yet, but Swami Records is planning a showcase with:
Night Marchers
Dan Sartain
Marked men
CPC Gangbangs
and others
Night Marchers is the new John Reis (Drive Like Jehu/RFTC/Sultans/Hot Snakes) project. It's basically Hot Snakes without Rick Froberg, plus a new drummer. Color me excited.

The Redwalls are also confirmed for SXSW. Not shown in this list.
-RR
Alpha Rev is also confirmed for SXSW.
I am furious yellow! Stephen Malkmus (Pavement dude), with a new album dropping March 18, is skipping SXSW and starting his tour the week after, in Minneapolis?! As W might muse, what's up with yr strategery?
Malkmus Schmalkmus - we get DOLLY FREAKIN PARTON!
(Although having both Malkmus and Parton in the same place at the same time would be magical.)
Cut Copy
I'm stoked

It says they're doing a showcase or 3, but I don't see them announced formally... anyone know more? These guys are amazing, seriously.
