The Church of the Friendly Ghost is invading the Salvage Vanguard theater on a Tuesday this week, featuring performances from the E.C.F.A. trio and Attic Ted.
Who and what are the E.C.F.A. trio, you may be wondering? Well, apparently the acronym E.C.F.A. stands for “emanation, creation, formation, and action,” and it isn’t a splinter group of your neighborhood New Age reading circle. No, this evening it consists of saxophonist Carl Smith, trumpeter Derek Phelps and drummer Jason Friedrich as they jam. Smith is a jazz musician whose studies have taken him everywhere from Berlin to Detroit, and he and a few associates have a new album coming out under the E.C.F.A. banner entitled Der Wald. Smith and Texas musicians Phelps and Friedrich will give this new material a solid workout, to be sure, and all fans of free jazz should clear their schedules for tonight’s performance.
The jazz trio will be followed by the music of San Marcos’ Attic Ted, label mates of the E.C.F.A. trio on Pecan Crazy records and a band specializing in “Insane Asylum Country Gothic Carnival” music. Attic Ted has a tendency to wear freaky masks while playing their equally freaky music, and it’s easy to concur with word from the Church of the Friendly Ghost H.Q. that this show is “guaranteed not to be boring.” Also: “Expect audience interaction.”

Attic Ted puts on a great show. Go see.
I do miss their guitarist though, I think they need a bit more diversity in their sound.
