Mediums and Balmorhea Bring the Beauty Tonight at Lambert's

With all due respect, It's easy to get lost in the scuffed gloss of Austin's rather self-aware indie-rock scene. Take it from us, and we honestly love the damned thing, in all of its shabby hipster glory. We just sometimes need a change of pace to keep a healthy perspective on all the different pockets of music in this crazy burg. This evening, we encourage you, if you're so inclined, to join us for an evening of solid, unconventional sonic artistry from a scene that is thriving and gaining Austin national recognition for something other than our hallowed go-to bands.

One of Austin's best kept musical secrets, a show by experimental instrumentalists Mediums is not to be missed under any circumstances. Austinist has been in love with these kids since catching them at Azul (R.I.P.) way back in early '07 and swooning over their ability to create lush, competent soundscapes like most people make grilled cheese sandwiches. Also, considering the gravity of their music, they possess a refreshing lack of pretension that enables unfettered enjoyment of what they produce. Tonight they headline a show at Lambert's with fellow mellow jammers Balmorhea, another Austin gem that's been waiting in the wings for far too many listeners. When they're not playing all over the damned place, they also call A-town home, so catch them while you can. Teddy bear David Israel, who sounds eerily like Calvin Johnson joined the Silver Jews, opens, wearing a heart the size of Texas on his sleeve.
