Austinist Weekend Music Preview: Steamroller and The Sword

Emo’s Free Week has come and gone, but the venue and the city march on with a buffet of mouth-watering shows available for consumption tonight. Eclectic beats from Dan Deacon pace Emo’s inside stage (as a part of the Ultimate Reality Tour) while Steamroller, She Craves, Killer Crocs of Uganda, and The Banner Year rock Emo’s Lounge.

Steamroller members have stayed busy since the band called it quits, although reunion shows have been occasionally sprinkled around the city since their demise. Drummer Brandon Elizondo has paired with each vocalist/guitarist from the band in new projects -- the Hendrix-inspired Red Line Riot features Elizondo and Steamroller’s Kevin Dodds, while Elizondo joins Michael McLellan to unleash the blues-rock sounds of the Spoiled Royals. Steamroller's brand of rock'n'roll incorporates elements of funk and southern rock, though they've been known to bust out the odd Bob Marley or Cheap Trick cover during their set. The band lit up defunct venues such as Steamboat and The Black Cat Lounge in the '90s and they reunite tonight to bring their raucous live show to a new generation. This "Rock & Awe" showcase (put on by INsite Magazine and Rock Show Promotions) is a double release party of sorts -- She Craves commemorate the video for their “Radio Days” single while the Killer Crocs of Uganda celebrate the release of their album, Almost Lost Tomorrow.

In the mood for legends? There are a host of events catering to you tonight as well. Pinetop Perkins (recently nominated for a couple of Grammys) sings the blues at Antone’s while the Pink Floyd Laser Spectacular takes over Austin Music Hall. There are some tribute nights in the mix as well -- “Songs of Leonard Cohen” (done by the likes of Molly Venter and Steve Zirkel, the latter having toured with Cohen in 1988) at St. Michael’s Epsiscopal Church, and the regular U2 Tribute at Fadó featuring Mysterious Ways.

iKiLLcaRS (EP review), The Koreans, Black Panda, and The Pepperonis entertain at The Mohawk while the Dazzling King Solomon Band and Horse + Donkey drone away at the Hole In The Wall.

Previews of more fun weekend events after the jump!

Shapes Have Fangs“Spectre” video is currently airing on ME Television but you can catch it live at Beerland with the added bonus of a rousing set by the Faceless Werewolves.

The Sanguinistas (early) and Abby Birds (late) soften up Room 710 while Channel One pacifies Flamingo Cantina. Ruta Maya hosts a benefit for Jennifer Marchand with musical relief coming in the form of a catalog of local luminaries such as Amplified Heat, The Alice Rose, Paul Minor, Chili Cold Blood, The Summer Wardrobe, and Carolyn Wonderland. Fastball was added to the line-up yesterday as well.

If you want to get started early, BackSpin Records' "Grand Opening Throwdown" kicks off at 6 p.m. with DJs Starsign and NickNack at the helm. Free beer to boot!

Abra Moore at Eddie V’s Edgewater Grille and BettySoo’s Friday residency at Cedar Street round off the choice events for Friday evening.

Arguably Austin’s biggest metal act at the moment, The Sword bring fables, riffs, and hopefully a whole lotta previews from their eagerly anticipated follow up to 2006’s Age of Winters to Emo’s (outside) on Saturday. _Gods of the Earth_ is scheduled for release on March 18 while their new single “Fire Lances of the Ancient Hyperzephyrians” should see light of day night on a 10" vinyl EP shortly.

Catch Yellow Fever’s infectious pop at Emo’s (inside) or make your way to The Mohawk for the soothing sounds of All In The Golden Afternoon along with ringing melodies from The Bronze Age (formerly Quiet, Lovely). Better still, stay within the cozy confines of Hyde Park with The Fever Dreams at The Parlor for a special Exemplary Records Anniversary show.

If you’re leaving the city limits, Gruene Hall evokes nostalgia and encourages dancing courtesy of the White Ghost Shivers (at noon) and The Gourds (at 10 p.m.). Or dance to a different tune at Plush with the Table Manners crew.

Have a great weekend!
