Austinist Show Preview: Peel, Fishboy, Poison Control Center

On Wednesday at the Salvage Vanguard theatre, a character named Ethan Master of the Hawaiian Ukulele stripped down to his bathing suit, donned a hat and colorful lei, and then stood on his amp to proclaim, via song, “I heard noise-pop is in.” You know Ethan, you might be right. And leading the fray are none other than our own Peel, a magnanimously kick-ass band whose bits of unbridled feedback and synthesizer explosions are balanced with a collective appreciation for the types of melodies that make ears smile. With some out-of-town friends, Peel will play The Mohawk this Sunday as a fitting end to a great week of music. It also needs to be mentioned that Austin website PartyEnds is presenting this shindig, perhaps to give their coverage of Car Stereo (Wars) a much-needed break.

Joining Peel are Fishboy, a fancy-free but talented guy and/or group whose albums, like the longwindedly titled Albatross: How We Failed to Save the Lone Star State with the Power of Rock and Roll or the Denton tribute Little D have made a fan out of Britt Daniel and the people at Happy Happy Birthday To Me Records out of Athens.

And journeying far from Ames, Iowa on a tour that will later take them across the greater midwest are Poison Control Center, quirky popsters who will appeal to anyone interested in the neo-psychedelia of the Elephant Six collective – you know who you are. The album they’re currently supporting is entitled A Collage of Impressions, which interestingly enough features a song written from the viewpoint of French sculptor Camille Claudel.
