Austinist Show Preview: Church of the Friendly Ghost night at the Salvage Vanguard Theatre
Wednesday, January 9, 5 dollars
Salvage Vanguard Theatre ()
8pm-11pm
[info]
While every performance the Church of the Friendly Ghost puts on is assuredly special, this Wednesday evening they will host three diverse acts at the Salvage Vanguard Theatre sure to satisfy your every experimental, avant-garde whim.
Former Sound TEAM player Bill Baird will be there playing songs under his newest moniker, {{{Sunset}}}, sending out waves of undulating harmonic bliss the way his band name emits brackets. They may still have copies of the limited Autobus cassette release Pink Clouds for sale, limited to just one hundred copies, but we can’t promise anything.
Joining {{{Sunset}}} are a Baltimore band called The Organ Donors, a captivatingly odd trio of musicians who work with ambient sound-scapes and folky pleasures equally well. And last, if these two acts aren’t weird enough for you, you’ll want to get there early for the openers. Three improvisational musicians, Nick Hennies (of The Weird Weeds), Chris Cogburn (of DUo, This Tight Rope and more), and out-there guitarist Jonathan Horne will test the limits of their abilities and imaginations (and maybe the patience of a few listeners) with a performance that promises, threatens, even, to be unusual, possibly atonal, and most certainly interesting.
Come join the Friendly Ghost Crew, the performers, and at least one Austinist staff member for this show. It begins early and doesn’t get out too late – just right for an otherwise nondescript Wednesday night.
