The film -- wrought with Sophoclesian dramatic fate and Aristophanesian comedy -- traces the history between Peter Stampfel and Steve Weber, a pair of misfits who met in the '60s, formed a band, and helped define what has come to be known as The Great Folk Scare. The band (perhaps obviously) favored Americana roots and all the joys and pitfalls of the early psychedelic era, and survived 40 years of bizarre tours, unbelievable predicaments, eulogy-worthy drug addictions and breakdowns to curate one of the longest, most fascinating musical histories. The film features interviews with former Rounders drummer/playwright/actor Sam Shepard, Dennis Hopper, The Fugs, Dave Van Ronk, John Sebastian , Peter Tork, Loudon Wainwright III and others.
Sam Wainwright Douglas is a native Texan and Austin-based filmmaker. He edited and co-produced Raise the Roof, an award-winning documentary on Irish traditional music, which has played several festivals and aired on the BBC and RTÉ, the national television network in Ireland. Currently, he is directing and producing SNAKEBIT, a documentary on the progressive architect Samuel Mockbee and the radical design/build program, the Rural Studio, which Mockbee founded in Alabama to provide better living conditions for the rural poor.
