As recently as last week, Charles indicated that he intended to stay with the Longhorns for his final season. But on Wednesday, Charles told Texas Coach Mack Brown that he felt ready for the pros.
"UT is a wonderful place and everyone has been so good to me," Charles said. "But, playing in the NFL has always been my dream and when the NFL report came back, I was happy with the grade and felt like it was best for me to enter the draft."
As a junior, Charles rushed for 1,619 yards, the fifth-best season in Texas history. He won unanimous first-team All-Big 12 honors and capped his junior year with a 161-yard, two-touchdown performance in the Longhorns' 52-34 victory over Arizona State in the Holiday Bowl.
In other Longhorn football news, assistant head coach and co-defensive coordinator Larry Mac Duff has decided to leave his position with the Longhorns after one season.
"Larry and I met this morning and he informed me that he is not returning for the 2008 season, citing philosophical differences," Brown said. "Larry is a great coach and man and we appreciate all he's done for our program. We want to wish him luck in the future and will begin looking for a replacement immediately."

Too soon.
Better than sticking around and untimately ending up at the courthouse like the rest of the good players.
