Austinist Weekend Music Preview: Christmas Special & Karmatronic
Meanwhile, Room 710 hosts Judas Bear, Che Arthur, and The Sanguinistas on Friday evening. The Judas Bear members have been busy with other projects of late but they reunite to headline this evening, while former Atombombpocketknife member and multi-instrumentalist Che Arthur showcases material from his Iron record, released earlier this year on Sick Room Records, LTD. The Sanguinistas open with sprawls of countrified rock riddled with pop hooks.
Interesting in catching some legends this weekend? The Arc Angels play the second of two gigs at Antone’s on Friday whereas James Hand tells his bittersweet tales at Ginny’s Little Longhorn Saloon. Entertainment at Lambert's comes in the shape of rockabilly and raunchiness courtesy of Johnny Hootrock (featuring former members of the Flametrick Subs) along with Cardinal Cyn and SideShow Burlesque.
Other bands worth checking out on Friday night -- Manejo Beto light up Flamingo Cantina with “indie en español” (Le Diamant Brut) and Crash Gallery electrifies The Mohawk with a stimulating combination of frenetic vocals, driving guitars, and thumping beats. Always a fun live show, the White Ghost Shivers put on their dancing shoes at the Continental Club. The troupe will be “dredging up their old set lists and cherry picking songs for a nostalgic romp though WGS past” from what we gather. Planning on leaving the house early on Friday evening? Seaflea rocks Red 7 at 9:30 p.m.
Details on more weekend events after the jump!
Red 7 hosts a Band Slam! ready line-up featuring Comanche Abortion, Hairdos on Fire, O’Pioneers, and Mammoth Grinder. Car Stereo (Wars) pilots the beats late at the Beauty Bar with Treasure Fingers from Atlanta opening up. (Wars), or Chris Rose rather, informs us that he's been “working on a lot of new stuff” and is extremely excited to present some of his latest wares on Saturday night. You can jam out Treasure Fingers' “Cross The Dancefloor” here.
The Old 97’s play La Zona Rosa in the middle slot of three Texas dates before Rhett Miller embarks on his solo tour. The band itself is staying busy working on their seventh full-length record. In the meantime, listen to the newest Old 97’s song, “Here it is Christmas Time” on their official website.
Karma Lounge is home to Karmatronik, “An Eclectic Night of Deep Underground Grooves” on Saturday night, with the likes of DubNautica and Tego at the helm. DubNautica is another brainchild of Sky, also the main creative force behind Hipnautica. While Hipnautica leans towards varied elements of industrial and synth rock with Sky usually backed by a full band, DubNautica tends to feature Sky solo and “is much more dance club oriented”, Sky tells us. He goes on to add, “Like Hipnautica, it is based on a wide variety of genres but mainly focused on Dub, Reggae, Reggaeton, Breakbeat, DubStep, Techno and Trance. Also like a DJ, I tend to beat match for seamless sets from 1-4 hours. The music is typically referred to as Psy World Trance with DubStep influences.” Sounds intriguing, we must admit.
Still not satisfied? Make your way to The Mohawk on Sunday night for beats n’ rhymes with DJ Jester The Filipino Fist and Grand Buffet.
Next stop, 2008.
