Lake Travis, Pflugerville Go After State Football Titles
The Pflugerville Panthers play the Katy Tigers at 7 pm Saturday at the Alamodome in San Antonio for the Class 5A Division II championship, while the Lake Travis Cavaliers take on the Highland Park Scots for the Class 4A Division II title at 1:30 pm Saturday at Baylor's Floyd Casey Stadium in Waco.
Pflugerville (12-3) advanced to the finals after an overtime victory against Abilene last week. The Panthers have been the underdogs throughout much of their playoff run, and they'll be in that position again Saturday against an undefeated (15-0) Katy team that is backed by a strong tradition. The Tigers won state championships in 2000 and 2003 and have won four titles overall.
By the way, if you think that Pflugerville's uniforms look familiar, it may be because of NBC's "Friday Night Lights". The Dillon Panthers' helmet logo and colors are modeled after Pflugerville's blue-and-gold scheme. Scenes from the show have been filmed at the school's football stadium, as well.
Lake Travis (14-1) is also taking on an undefeated opponent in Highland Park (15-0), who advanced to the championship game with a win over Everman last week. The Cavaliers are led by junior quarterback Garrett Gilbert, who has thrown for 4,466 yards and 49 TDs. Lake Travis' only loss is to Class 5A Austin Westlake, 28-21.
Both games will also be on television this weekend. Fox Sports Network (FSN Southwest) will show the Pflugerville-Katy game live on Saturday, and the Lake Travis-Highland Park game will be shown on a tape-delay basis at 1 pm Sunday on FSN Southwest.
