Austinist Weekend Music Preview: IV Thieves at Emo's & More

As Christmas approaches, good shows tend to get sporadic and good friends tend to leave town, but the promise of Emo’s Free Week will carry us into the empty canvas that is 2008. Still, we have ten days or so to find that one last good moment of 2007.

It could come tonight at Emo’s, where a familiar looking lineup in the form of Ringo Deathstarr, Haunting Oboe Music, and La Snacks takes the stage. The trio of bands brought sweet noise to Club Deville last month, and they return to provide one last bang for the year on the inside stage. If you haven’t picked up Ringo Deathstarr’s killer EP (released in October by SVC Records), buy it here, now!

Li’l Cap’n Travis provide remedies and melodies for the winter cold at the Hole In The Wall with support from Ethan Azarian (of Orange Mothers). Watch Li’l Cap’n Travis’ hilarious new video (for “Get Wise To Yourself”) on YouTube and if you like it enough, vote for it to win ME Television’s “Best Austin Video” award.

At Beerland, Brothers And Sisters members brother David Morgan and brother Daniel Wilcox will be busting out material originally penned by The Kinks. Meanwhile, the legendary Asleep At The Wheel's driving Americana can be experienced at Broken Spoke, and The Soldier Thread (Le Diamant Brut) fire up Stubb’s (inside) with Sounds Under Radio.

Follow the jump for a preview of Saturday's fun events.

There is only one place to be on Saturday -- The Mohawk hosts our Indieroke night -- come on down and sing your favorite sleeper hit or new wave classic. We will have a large collection of songs on hand, from Annie’s “Chewing Gum” to Yeah Yeah Yeahs' “Maps”, we have you covered.

Of course, there is other stuff going on too this night. We were unsuccessful in catching them at Ground Zero Texas fest but the Bleach Boys return to provide us with another chance to watch them rock Beerland with tracks like “Pukewave” and “Party With The Sharks”, while Blood of Ronin’s sludge metal drips down the walls of Room 710.

Momo’s hosts a couple of acts with ladies featured in Austin Music Foundation’s 2007 She Rocks Calendar -- Adrian & The Sickness and Velvet Brick play the venue above Katz's Deli & Bar on the special occasion of Adrian Conner’s birthday.

Lastly, IV Thieves return to bring pop ditties to Emo’s (although sans a bassist). Per Glynn Wedgewood -- “It has been a busy year for the IV Thieves members what with weddings, babies, and other crazy things like changing band members. We just wanted to do an informal show at the end of the year before we start work on some other projects in January ‘08, that and we wanted to get drunk before X-mas day!” Wedgewood is now also with MrandMrsMays while Shane Lawlor has started a new band called Electric Touch. Regardless, help the IV Thieves steal Christmas glory inside Emo’s on Saturday. But only after singing a Brit-Pop classic or two at the Mohawk!
