Austinist Show Preview: American Mid-Fi Records Showcase
Unlike the faux-rockers American Hi-Fi from Boston, Massachusetts, American Mid-Fi are a similarly named musical collective from right here in Austin. A consortium of some eight bands, the American Mid-Fi label, or “movement,” as they’d like to be known, rep North Austin (why not?) and count the garage rock Dr. Zoom and lap-pop computer jams of Prices This Low Won’t Last amongst their associates.
This Friday, American Mid-Fi will host a performance and release party at The Mohawk inside. What for, you ask? Well, the label has put together a very unique Christmas album. Names were drawn from a hat and members of different bands paired off with one another to write new songs. According to label president Matthew Squires, the end result ranged from “rock to folk to pop to emoish stuff to rap to funk.” Something for everyone, it seems, even mall punks.
The Christmas album will be covered in its entirety by the collective, who will go onstage in turn to present their emo/funk/rock/folk/pop collaborations. But before this gets underway, Dr. Zoom, Superhouse and Burywood will each play a set to warm things up.
