Austinist Weekend Music Preview: Young Heart Attack & Misprint Magazine Holiday Party
Young Heart Attack is hard at work on their 2nd full-length Rock And Awe (due in March) and is bound for the U.K. following the release. The band knows only one way to rock -- full throttle. Chris Hodge sings and screams like a man possessed, combining astutely with Frenchie’s electric six-string wizardry and the lovely Jennifer Stephens’ vocal prowess to generate one fist-pumping anthem after another.
Meanwhile, The Toadies’ reunion shows are becoming commonplace of late (they could be the next KISS!), not that we’re complaining. It is quite heart warming to see this bill which is extremely close to one we witnessed at Liberty Lunch (R.I.P.) in the mid-'90s although sans Brutal Juice and Radish. Nostalgia just ain’t what it used to be. Still, classics like “Tyler” and “Possum Kingdom” continue to appease the masses, who will no doubt clamor for new material at the sold out show.
There is more rawk to be found at Ruta Maya with The Action Is and Tia Carrera taking the rock n’ roll reins at the South Congress coffee-shop.
Details on the rest of this weekend's quality shows after the jump!
If you’d rather not metal up your Friday evening, head on over to the Scoot Inn for Misprint Magazine’s Holiday Party as well as the release of their latest (Tough) issue. The previous issue was just fantastic we thought, despite a jovial dig or two at the Austinist and because of the Bruce Dickinson shout-out in the sweet Misprint Corporate Jet centrespread. The new issue will be available (everywhere Misprint Magazine is available) in January but pick up your issue early at the Scoot Inn on Friday. Music by Red Leaves and Hot Pentecostals, and DJ sets by Stay Gold provide further entertainment.
The best of the rest on Friday includes Sons Of Hercules, The Jungle Rockers, and Shapes Have Fangs for free at The Mohawk, Mice & Rifles at Stubb’s, HUG at Room 710, and DJ Jester the Filipino Fist at Emo’s Lounge. Also, Ghost Of The Russian Empire play two sets this weekend at the United States Art Authority (510 W. 29th, 78705 -- behind Spiderhouse). The events are scheduled for both, Friday and Saturday evening, and include a “Holiday Play” at 8 p.m. followed by live music at 10 p.m. Cover is $10, or $7 with two canned goods that will be donated to the Capital Area Food Bank Of Texas. Lastly, there is some electro action after all, at the Elysium with Femme Fatality, Hipnautica, DJ Siren Summer, and Texas Female DJ’s piloting the beats through the night.
Saturday sees solid shows scattered around town as well. Look for upcoming previews on the Austinist featuring this evening’s happenings, including the massive free show at Emo’s featuring the likes of The Walkmen, Zykos, and Horse+Donkey outside, as well as These Arms Are Snakes and Russian Circles inside. The Beauty Bar hosts the dance party this night with synth-pop from the intriguing duo, Gil Mantera’s Party Dream along with DJ Mel. Ruta Maya presents a dream-pop fest of sorts with melodies supplied by The Boxing Lesson, The Story Of, The Mercers, and Tammany Hall Machine, while Pink Nasty serenades at the Hole In The Wall. Stay safe, stay warm, and have a great weekend!
