Now this is what we call a Texas winter! You arrive at work bundled up in scarf and pea coat, yet leave squinting at the sun in a wife-beater. Today we've been tramping about in the wonderfully miserable weather looking forward to a cozy bill this evening at the Mohawk that is sure to warm up even the most obstinate Austin cold weather flip-flop wearer. Prop yourself up next to the fireplace inside and catch esoteric alt-country outfit Mice & Rifles performing a stripped down set with pedal steel and guitar. Grab a hot toddy in between sets and check out Monahans, the new incarnation of the late Milton Mapes. The Mapes rocked us consistently until they evolved (and moved away from Austin), but from what we've heard of their new project, we like the new direction. The Dark Water Hymnal headline the evening with dark, brooding goth-folk that would send shivers up Will Oldham's spine. You owe it to yourself to check out some of their tunes in preparation for the show. We'll save a space near the fire for you.
