Around Here, Eating Local is Harder Not To Do

Edible Austin’s first annual Eat Local Week celebration runs from Saturday December 8th through Saturday December 15th. While you’re nourishing body and soul with locally-grown and handmade foods from an extensive list of participating restaurants and markets, a portion of proceeds will go to Urban Roots, a program which teaches sustainable agriculture fundamentals to East Austin youth. 15-20 participants aged 14-18 will be awarded a paid internship to grow food on an 2-5 acre urban farm, with the harvest to be donated to local soup kitchens. Alice Waters would be proud. As if that isn’t enough of a reason to make the journey to Satay or hit up Primizie like you've been meaning to, Austin also has an extensive list of participating CSAs and farmer’s markets—and plenty of fine greens and roots in season!

The whole ordeal kicks off today at the Downtown Farmer’s Market with a City proclamation, chef’s demos, and live music. The week to follow is peppered with Edible Austin-hosted events promoting all that is local and good—happy hour at Blue Dahlia Bistro featuring Hill Country beer and wine specials and Brazilian folk music by Seu Jacinto, dinners by the husband-wife local-food powerhouse that is Dai Due, and a French-Moroccan feast accompanying a screening of Casablanca at the Alamo. Check out the website for the whole slew of mystery dinners, cooking parties, wine tastings, and other culinary celebrations in full force throughout the holidays and beyond.
